[sci-fi, fantasy, and horror] Mini news roundup: Parallel, The Endless, & Tigers Are Not Afraid

First look at upcoming sci-fi thriller Parallel; Eli Roth praises the UFO death cult film The Endless, and Tigers Are Not Afraid is currently screening to rave reviews.

Parallel

Recently, filmmaker Isaac Ezban (The Incident, The Similars) promised that a clip from his new sci-fi thriller and English-language debut, Parallel, would soon be shared. Parallel is about a group of young tech developers who discover a portal to a multiverse in their attic. The group quickly begins exploiting their access to other dimensions, using it to gain knowledge, money, success, and more. This does, of course, have its consequences. Parallel‘s cast includes Marc O’Brien, Alyssa Diaz, Georgia King, Aml Ameen and Martin Wallström. The script was written by Scott Blaszak. Bron studios, which produced the film, posted a clip yesterday:

I got to watch Parallel when I attended Fantasia Festival this past July. I loved the film and am really excited for people to watch it!

The Endless

In a recent interview, Eli Roth praised the sci-fi horror film about a UFO death cult:

  • On The Endless: When I watch a movie like The Endless, and I see what (directors) Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson were doing, I’m like, ‘Oh, my god!’ Right away, I went and watched Resolution, and then, right after that, I watched Spring and I’ll probably go back and re-watch The Endless. That’s a great example of a movie that [Justin Benson] just wrote and made. It’s in a few locations in the woods, mostly shot in daylight, and I can’t stop thinking about it. So, that really impresses me. It’s just smart writing and directing, and they did it themselves. I have the utmost respect for that.”
  • Roth is asked about his vision for The Meg when he was signed onto direct, but he declines answering, saying that “it just seems like that would be bad sportsmanship” but does say that “I was not supposed to direct that movie, I was supposed to direct [The House With a Clock In Its Walls].”
  • If you’re wondering, some other films he’s watched and enjoyed recently are: Hereditary, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Trollhunter, and Get Out.
  • The rest of the interview is about his new movie, The House With a Clock In Its Walls.

The Endless is currently streaming on Netflix! It’s personally one of my favorite movies of 2018, SO GO WATCH IT!

Tigers Are Not Afraid

Hola Mexico Film Festival, which is the largest Mexican film festival outside of Mexico, is currently on tour in the United States, and Tigers Are Not Afraid will be screening during the festival next weekend. Tigers was written and directed by Issa López. It currently has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes in both critic and audiences scores!

Synopsis from source: Hailed by Oscar-winner Guillermo del Toro as one of the best Mexican films in recent years, Issa López’s dark fantasy is a heartfelt genre film that surpasses all expectations. Its protagonist, 10-year-old Estrella, has three wishes. The first one is for her missing mother to return. Her wish is granted, but her mother is dead and her ghost follows her everywhere. Terrified, Estrella tries to escape by joining a gang of orphan children, but she quickly discovers that in the real world, ghosts are never truly left behind, and that only the bravest survive the brutality and violence that surround her.
